Cynthia Cogswell
Cynthia Cogswell, MA, CCC-SLP is a speech-language pathologist specializing in speech and myofunctional disorders. She brings extensive experience from hospitals, cleft palate teams, school settings, and private practice.
Early in her career, she recognized the value of integrating myofunctional therapy with evidence-based speech therapy to optimize overall oral function. Her approach targets the muscle patterns that influence facial development, dental occlusion, orofacial tension, and airway stability.
By eliminating harmful oral habits, establishing proper tongue-resting posture, promoting nasal breathing, correcting tongue-thrust swallowing, and assessing potential tongue restriction, Cynthia helps patients enhance eating, drinking, and speaking skills, while reducing the risk of orthodontic relapse.
Education
Cynthia earned her master’s degree in Communicative Disorders from the University of the Pacific and received certifications from the Academy of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy–International in 1999 and 2016. In 2021, she was named a Breathe Institute Ambassador after completing the Institute’s nine-month advanced MYO-Masterminds program.
Committed to ongoing professional growth, Cynthia participates in annual continuing education courses and participates in ongoing dental-airway study groups to remain current with emerging research and updated methodologies. Her extensive continuing education includes programs through ASHA, CSHA, the Academy of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (AOMT), and AAPMD.
Her advanced training includes Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs), TalkTools, Char Boshart’s Articulation Program, the Beckman Oral-Motor Program, SATPAC, Lindamood Bell Program, the CAPDOTS Auditory Training System, specialized coursework through the Breathe Institute. The advanced training in OMDs allows her to thoroughly assess and effectively treat patients with myofunctional disorders, including those related to tongue tie.
Values
Families have always been at the heart of her practice. As both a mother and an experienced clinician, Cynthia values the insights families bring to the therapeutic process and works with clients and caregivers to develop treatment plans that are realistic, supportive, and tailored to their goals.
Cynthia strongly believes in teamwork. By collaborating closely with dentists, orthodontists, ENTs, sleep specialists, craniosacral therapists, and educators, she helps ensure a comprehensive and coordinated approach to care, leading to the best possible outcomes for her patients.
In her free time, Cynthia enjoys being with her family, playing tennis, hiking, and skiing.
